Costco – What you may not know!

If you ever shopped at Costco before, you have braved the crowds and long checkout lines. Other than bulk versions of products you already know, Costco offers much more than just products alone. You know an annual membership is required, and you continue to question if it’s worth it.

Costco Membership offers a variety of benefits such as the ones they continue to put right in front of you in the form of Costco Travel and rotating discount coupons every month, but there is more to it.

Let’s say for some reason you do not feel like you can reap enough of the benefits of Costco membership during the year. You can technically go into the store on the last day of your membership and receive a full refund. In a more common case, let’s say you upgraded to the more pricy executive membership to get the 2% cash back, but only received a voucher for $20 because you did not spend enough. You can go to the membership counter and request a refund of the difference between the Gold Star $55 membership plus the amount of the reward check with the Executive $110 membership. In essence, you can always get the Executive membership and get back at least the difference between going for the upgraded membership and the regular membership.

You may know that Costco has an amazing return policy. In case you actually keep certain electronics like TV’s, projectors, and computers, you actually receive the 2nd year warranty for free as part of your membership. Manufacturer warranties for these products generally last 1 year, so the 2nd year does come in handy. If you actually need to utilize the warranty, Costco Concierge has technical support to walk you through it and even contact the manufacturer. If you just don’t like the products, electronics can be returned within 90 days, and the rest of the items can be returned…whenever. You may actually have a good reason for returning something like it didn’t function, it was molding before the expiration date, etc. Technically, you can also return anything, for any reason. You can also return products sold on their website at the store as well. With that said, don’t go returning crazy or you’ll most likely get on their watch list.

If you are just bored on the weekend, you can go grab your complementary lunch on Saturday. Saturday tends to be the day with the most sample stations, enough for you to get a satisfactory meal at times. Even if the samples were not enough, you can grab a cheap bite at the food court. If the food court line seems unruly, and you actually need to buy something inside the store, go order your food court items at the register when you pay so that you can then stand in the much shorter prepaid line to grab your food.

If you ever wanted huge Costco pizzas for an event, always call in early. You can call in Costco pizza orders before going to the store, just contact your local Costco. Pizza orders can take as little as 20 minutes to up to 1.5 hours depending on how busy they are.

A few of the services in the store such as the pharmacy and optometrist do not require Costco membership. Also, you can purchase alcohol without membership due to state laws. You can go in and order your very own case of Kirkland Light beer or Kirkland Vodka from France. When you enter the store, just say you are going to just buy alcohol, and you will be let in.While you are there, grab some free samples.

Other membership benefits may be better for business such as merchant card processing, payroll, and accounting, but other benefits such as custom checks and insurance are available to all. I would go as far as saying the Costco Tire Center could be a benefit since their tires are competitively priced, especially when a coupon offer is available when you buy a set of 4. The downside of the tire center is the extremely long wait times and lack of variety of tires. The wait times may seem more bearable because you can just make more runs around the store looking for more things to buy, but sometimes even then you will end up waiting for your car.

Costco’s current American Express credit card is pretty good too by offering 3% cash back at gas stations, 2% cash back at restaurants and travel, and 1% for everything else. By combining all of these cash back options, Costco really tries to make their membership worth it.

Costco gas tends to be cheaper than the surrounding gas stations in the area, but the lines tend to be crazy long. In order to avoid the lines, you will need to get gas really early in the morning before the store opens or around or after closing time. Compared to other gas stations, Costco gas works just fine, and Costco claims they use “Top Tier” gas. I’ll let you decide.

There’s more to Costco than what I have in this list, but it’s a start. Happy shopping!

Mana Sushi & Korean BBQ

2580 Alta Arden Expy

Rating: ★★★½☆

First of all, I am sorry that the Bi Bim Bab picture came out that way. I must have moved my arm and got super hungry. On this busy Valentines Day evening, we vowed not to visit American restaurants due to the large crowds and long waits. So, we opted to try out the recently renovated Mana restaurant in the Arden area. There was no wait, and the restaurant was about half full. The restaurant was decorated for the holiday with many Mylar balloons strewn over the ceilings. The hostess quickly seated us and provided the menus.

Today, we decided to order rolls that included the Maya, Spieg, and Lion King. We also ordered their Dol Sot Bi Bim Bab. The rolls were of decent size, comparable to Arigatos. All the rolls tasted fresh, but there was not to much flavor. There was not too much of a difference between the Maya and Spieg except one was crunchier with the soft shell crab. Although the green onion added more flavor to the two rolls, I would prefer the rolls sans green onion because the added taste detracts away from whatever flavor the roll had on its own. The lion king was disappointing in comparison to Arigatos. The roll was not that hot and tasted mushy. The Dol Sot Bi Bim Bab tasted OK, but was not that flavorful. The bowl would have tasted better if it had more variety of vegetables. Understandably, since the restaurant served both Japanese and Korean food, they are unable to make the dishes as authentic as possible due to food variety constraints.

Overall, the food served did taste fresh and the service was great even on the holiday. There is a large variety of rolls on the menu, but I had trouble finding rolls without cream cheese or spicy tuna, which I do not like. The availability of Korean options is nice, and Mana does do a relatively good job in the execution of the dishes. If you wanted to eat both Japanese and Korean food at the same time and not be too disappointed, then Mana would be a good choice.

Thai Canteen

1501 16th Street #100

Rating: ★★☆☆☆

I was recommended by a coworker to try out Thai Canteen due to the delicious food that they served here. Upon entering the restaurant for lunch on the weekend, there were not a lot of seated tables. At this restaurant, you order off the large posted menu board at the staffed register.

Today, we decided to order the Kang Kari (yellow curry), Larb Gai (Chicken larb salad),  peak gai tod (fried chicken wings), and sticky rice. The yellow curry did taste very good and had quite a bit of yellow curry flavor, but it was on the overly sweet side. There was just enough curry to finish off the provided white rice. I usually find that more Americanized Thai restaurants tend to flavor their food on the sweeter side to appeal to more palettes, but the overly sweetness throws off the curry. The sticky rice came unappealingly wrapped in foil, but tasted OK. The fried chicken wings were very dry and did not have a lot of meat on them. The provided sauce did help moisten the wings a bit, but I was not a fan of the sweet flavor. The chicken larb came spiced as ordered as “hot”, but we found it weird how there were large pieces of lemongrass in the dish, which was not found at other Thai restaurants. There were also a lot of onions in the dish.

Overall, Thai Canteen serves up acceptable Thai dishes catered towards a more Americanized palette. If you wanted more authentic Thai food, you will have to look elsewhere like at Siam Restaurant. Service and appearance of the restaurant was good, and I was able to score a free Thai tea by liking their Facebook page. It is nice how they open late, but I wished they served up better food. Unfortunately, you will not have much luck finding great tasting authentic Asian food on the grid in Sacramento.

House Kitchen & Bar

555 Capitol Mall

Sacramento, CA 95814

Rating: ★★★★☆

On this trip to House, the staff had a table ready for our group based on our reservation. Service was great from start to finish, with the provided waters and carafes continuously refilled by the servers. The restaurant was fairly busy due to the lunch rush and the fact that it was payday. After reviewing the menu, I found that the prices were acceptable due to the ambiance and the type of customers the restaurant tends to serve.

Today, I decided to order the prime rib french dip with no onions. The sandwich is served with endless fries. The sandwich was presented well, sliced diagonally through the longer side, which showcased the fresh prime rib and oozing cheese. Once dipped into the provided au jus, the sandwich tastes even more flavorful with the aromas of the beef and seasonings. However, the au jus was a bit on the salty side, causing me to not be able to dip as much of the sandwich into it. Even without the au jus, the meat tasted flavorful and tender. The fries tasted fresh and had a cajun seasoning on them. Eventually, the fries also tasted a bit salty. As you finish your fries, you just need to flag down a server to put an order in for more fries.

Overall, the food tasted delicious except for the overly-salty au jus and some of the fries. I really enjoyed the flavor of the sandwich as well as the ambiance. However, not everyone’s food arrived on time, with 2 people without food for quite a long time. The restaurant did redeem themselves by having the owner/chef come out in person to apologize for the long wait as well as comp us on 3 dishes. I really liked that attitude and his desire to keep his customers loyal. Given the chance to eat here again, I would probably take that opportunity.

On this trip to CalPERS, I decided to try out their famed Biscuits and Gravy that they serve up for breakfast every Thursday morning. The staff behind the counter were nice and smiled while preparing my globs of heart attack. I also noticed that there was a nice new batch of biscuits that were just dumped into the prep tray. I ordered the combo which also included eggs and sausage. The eggs were sub-par since the texture and color suggested they came out of a carton. The sausage tasted standard, but were a bit on the dry side. As for the biscuits, they went perfectly with the light country gravy. I was expecting the gravy to have more body and flavor, but they gravy still went well with the biscuits. Overall, the meal came in at a great value, but the quality of the eggs and lack of flavor in the gravy did hinder the rating. However, I would definitely eat this again due to the freshness and price point of the meal, except I would probably skip the eggs.
