NBC Seafood Restaurant – Monterey Park

404 S Atlantic Blvd
Monterey Park, CA 91754

Rating: ★★★★☆

NBC Seafood Restaurant serves up a variety of authentic Chinese dishes for dinner. This particular restaurant seems to be well known to LA natives. As you walk in, you can tell the place is pretty fancy with the décor, and the fact that all the workers are very dressed up.

Today, a variety of food was ordered by my relatives. First, the seafood soup tasted good, even though I only drank the liquid and did not partake in the other parts. The second dish was the pork and vegetable lettuce wrap. This dish had a savory flavor, but the vegetables did not taste fresh. The third dish was the honey walnut shrimp. I felt that NBC got the flavor right, but you can tell that there was a bit too much mayo in the sauce. Other than the sauce, the shrimp was cooked perfectly and the walnuts were crunchy. A bunch of other dishes came next in the form of clams, greens, and two different types of chicken. I did not eat the clams, greens, or the yellow chicken. I tried the soy sauce chicken, and the meat tasted dry, and the flavor was only OK. Next, the fried fish came out. The fish was a lot crispier than other varieties that I have tried. The fish was cooked well, but the sauce was overly salty. In the end, desert came in the form of red bean soup, but I did not partake in it.

Overall, NBC Seafood Restaurant serves up quality authentic Chinese food. Portion size were about right, but I would have liked slightly larger portions. If you are looking for authentic Chinese for dinner, head to NBC Seafood Restaurant.

East Gourmet Seafood Restaurant – Rosemead

8118A E Garvey Ave
Rosemead, CA 91770

Rating: ★★★★½

When people say that a lot of competition lowers prices, they weren’t kidding! Due to LA’s abundance of dim sum restaurants, many dim sum restaurants offer lower prices and promotions to lure people in. East Gourmet Seafood Restaurant is no exception. This restaurant offers rock bottom prices during the weekdays (at $1.68 per dish I think), and still good prices on the weekends ($1.99 per dish I think). Either way, LA dim sum definitely beats Sacramento in terms of pricing. Even more amazing, if you think you will spend over $30 in dim sum dishes, you can order a lobster over noodles dish for only $5! Now, onto the food:

Today, I did not really choose many of the items ordered, but I did get to try some of my favorites. The siu mai was pretty big and came with a lot of meat. The siu mai tasted fresh and tasted really good. The egg custard was also fresh and had a signature flakey crust. The long coconut bun was AMAZING! This particular bun happens to be the restaurant’s specialty. The bun was super fresh, super hot, and super flavorful! As you break open the bun, steam pours out. The har gow was bigger than the har gow in Sacramento and had more shrimp. You can definitely taste the flavor of the shrimp, and they have a bit of bamboo shoots inside. I also tried the steamed BBQ pork buns, which consisted of a lot of lean pork and had a lot of great flavors. The bun was still steaming hot, and was not overly salty. I also tried the BBQ pork cheung fun, but I did not like how it had cilantro and green onions inside, albeit, it still tasted really good. I tried the noodles from the lobster dish, and they tasted fresh and flavorful.

Overall, I definitely suggesting coming to East Gourmet Seafood Restaurant for dim sum. The prices are amazing, and carts keep coming around regularly. If you are in LA, you must come here at least once. Knowing how good it is, you might come multiple times until you get tired of dim sum.

Teriyaki Time – Part 2

4730 Natomas Blvd
Sacramento, CA 95835

Rating: ★★★★☆

Craving for some teriyaki? Then you must drive to Natomas to visit Teriyaki Time. Unlike my previous review, this time we opted for the honey spicy chicken plate and the pork teriyaki bowl. We got there right before closing time, so we saw a lot of the crew cleaning already. The honey spicy chicken tasted good, but was a bit dry, so I drenched it in teriyaki sauce. The overall taste was very good, and I’m glad I ordered my meal all rice so that I would have enough rice for all the chicken they provide. The pork teriyaki bowl definitely has less meat, but it was not as dry as the chicken. After finish the rice plate, I was stuffed.

Overall, Teriyaki Time is still worth visiting, just probably not right near closing time. If you still haven’t tried Teriyaki Time, try it.

Spahr’s Cafe

450 N St

Sacramento, CA 95614

Rating: ★★★☆☆

I did not expect a café at the bottom of this office building. Spahr’s Café serves up a variety of items from fries to burgers to sandwiches. Today, I decided to give it a try, so I went ahead and ordered the chili cheese fries. The food was cooked to order, so you can watch them cook while you wait. I received a decent sized container with a good amount of food packed inside. The chili tasted pretty good, and you can see the bits of meat mixed with the beans. There was a good amount of cheese in the meal as well. Overall, the flavor was OK, but I felt that the chili could have been seasoned more. I would also prefer that there were less beans in the chili. This café would be a good place to get food if there was nowhere else to go. I do have to say that they have good customer service.

TGI Fridays – Part 2

7101 Laguna Blvd
Elk Grove, CA 95758

Rating: ★★★☆☆

When I don’t feel like eating out for Asian food, I usually end up with fast food or American chain restaurants. Today, we ended up at TGI Fridays. Today, we ordered the Jack Daniels Burger and the Pulled Pork Sandwich. My Jack Daniels Burger came with sweet potato fries. The burger itself tasted delicious, especially after I smothered the meat with Jack Daniels sauce. The sauce provides a very sweet BBQ flavor. The overall flavor of the burger was really good, and the meat was tender and delicious. However, I did order the burger medium/medium-well, and it came out well done. The pulled pork sandwich was not so good. The sauce was way too salty. I did taste some flavor in there, but the saltiness killed it. The sweet potato fries tasted OK, but was not crispy at all. The regular fries that came with the pulled pork sandwich was way too salty. I felt that TGI Fridays went a dumped salt all over the fries and the sandwich.

Overall, the Jack Daniels burger was the highlight of the meal, and everything else was just very salty. If you do end up coming here, try to ask for light or no salt. Also, expect long wait times for your food. Service is pretty good, but sometimes you need to flag your waiter down. I’m not sure if I would come back here again, but if I did, I would only order Jack Daniels items.
