Johnny Rockets – Reno, NV

2500 E 2nd St
Grand Sierra Resort
Reno, NV 89502

Rating: ★★★★☆

Located inside Grand Sierra Resort and Casino, this iconic burger joint serves up great American food in a friendly fashion. We arrived a bit late, so we could only order take out.

Today, we ordered the bacon cheese fries and the strawberry Oreo crumble shake. The fries were fulfilling and had a good amount of cheese and bacon on top. The shake was delicious! Bits of Oreo surrounded by delicious strawberry was very refreshing.

Overall, if you want some simple diner food, Johnny Rockets is a decent place to go. Service was great, food was great, but prices were only OK. If you are staying at the Grand Sierra Resort, you will probably end up here at least once.

101 Taiwanese Cuisine – Reno, NV

400 W 5th St
Ste 104
Reno, NV 89503

Rating: ★★★½☆

In search of good cheap Asian food in Reno, we came across some tasty Taiwanese cuisine. Located a few blocks down from the big three casinos, 101 Taiwanese Cuisine serves up authentic Taiwanese food at a reasonable price.

Today we ordered the braised beef noodle soup, braised pork hamburger, and the crispy pork cutlets over rice. The braised beef noodle soup was very good. There was plenty of noodles and tender pieces of beef. The soup broth was full in flavor. The braised pork hamburger was OK. Calling the item a hamburger is a bit misleading. The burger is basically a slice of pork in a bun resembling a BBQ pork bun. The crispy pork cutlets was quite tasty and included two salads.

Overall, 101 Taiwanese Cuisine provides a decent array of food items to choose from. If you are in town and wanted to eat somewhere good outside of the casinos, then this would be a great place to go to.

Rating: ★★★★☆

You might be wondering why this BJ’s received a rating of 4/5. The main reason this BJ’s lost a point was due to the lack of service at the end of the meal. Although the restaurant was packed, our waiter continued to wait at other tables even though we finished our meal. He even caught the multiple glances that we gave him as he went to other tables. Other than this nuisance, the rest of the service and meal was impeccable.

We ordered the clam chowder in a sourdough bowl and the chicken parmigiana. The clam chowder was delicious, rivaling that of Chowders. However, the dug in bowl was not the volume I would expect in a bread bowl. The volume of soup resembled BJ’s standard soup offering. The bread bowl was also tasty and toasted. The chicken parmigiana tasted better than the last time it was ordered at the Natomas location. It had a nice kick in the sauce, and the chicken was juicy.

Overall, BJ’s at Arden proves to keep the quality of food at a high level. However, better service still resides at Natomas. If you are looking for good food and don’t mind mediocre service, BJ’s at Arden will do the trick.

Mo Du Rang

9545 Folsom Blvd
Ste 2
Sacramento, CA 95827

Rating: ★★★☆☆

Mo Du Rang has moved down Folsom Blvd from its previous location. Their new location seems a bit smaller, but has nice seating areas. Today, we ordered the pork bulgogi and the hot pot bimbibap. The server provided a large Korean pancake that had onions, avocado, and bell pepper in it. I was not a fan of the onions or bell peppers and rather prefer the pancake from 88 Tofu. The rest of the side dishes came, of which we kept about half. I still prefer the side dishes of 88 Tofu though.

The pork bulgogi came sizzling ferociously at the table. It actually splattered a bit on my clothes and arm, which kinda hurt. The taste was really good, but there was a decent amount of fatty parts in it. The hot pot bimbibap was good, but it would have been better if meat was included.

Overall, Mo Du Rang is pretty good, but it definitely is not the best out there. In addition, getting to Mo Du Rang is a bit out of the way off the freeway exit. If you want some Korean food in the area, Mo Du Rang still sits as a good option.

The Izakaya

5651 Freeport Blvd

Sacramento, CA 95822

Rating: ★★½☆☆

The Izakaya is my first attempt at a ramen house. The outside of the restaurant looks a lot better than its Jumbo Seafood Restaurant days. However, the interior still has the dinky old carpet. The rest of the restaurant has been changed including the tables, chairs, and decor.

Service was friendly, but definitely new to serving. Today, we ordered the Teppan Chicken Ramen, Beef Ramen, Golden California Roll, and the Pocket Roll. We came here with a 15% off bill coupon that we got in the neighborhood shopper. The Teppan Chicken Ramen was tasty, but needed some extra soy sauce to give it more flavor, but it was good nonetheless. The Beef Ramen also needed some extra flavor since it was a bit bland. The broth did taste really good though. I felt that the Beef Ramen had too much stuff in it though. The Golden California Roll was OK, but I felt it wasn’t crispy enough on the outside and lacked flavor. It was quite chewy. The Pocket Roll reminded me of the Howe at Arigato’s, but the Pocket Roll lacks much of the flavor in the Howe. The Pocket Roll has snow crab, shrimp tempura, avocado, and masago. The presentation of the sushi was really good, but the taste was lacking.

Overall, the Izakaya was OK, but not really worth a second visit. Unless you really like ramen, I would go get something else for lunch. Even with the 15% off coupon, I felt that the prices were a bit high for what you receive.
