L&L Hawaiian BBQ – Part 2

4160 Northgate Blvd #4
Sacramento, CA 95834

Rating: ★★★½☆

On this trip to L&L, I decided to try something different and order the Chicken Katsu Curry. Unlike the regular katsu offering with katsu sauce, this dish is furnished with delicious yellow curry, potato chunks, and carrot slices. Amazingly, I finished the entire plate. If you like curry, you should definitely give this dish a try.

Black Bear Diner

2700 El Centro Rd
Sacramento, CA 95833

Rating: ★★★★☆

As you arrive in inspired restaurant, you are treated to a newspaper menu that lists a plethora of menu options all at once. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner is available all day long. Service was really good, and even the manager checked up on tables at least twice during the meal. Today, we ordered a full stack of pancakes, tri-tip dip, and bacon wrapped chicken breast.

The pancakes arrived first, and looked huge! After tasting, I definitely feel that the pancakes tasted much better than both IHOP and Denny’s. The cakes were fluffy, but kept its shape. The tri-tip dip was equally delicious. The Au Jus was flavorful, the meat was tender, and the cheese melted. Accompanying the sandwich, the french fries were cooked well and tasted great with the sandwich. The meal also came with a side of chicken noodle soup that tasted good, but not spectacular. Finally, the bacon wrapped chicken breast was good. The bacon, broccoli, chicken, and sauce went well together. The only downside was that the chicken breast was too dry.

Overall, Black Bear Diner offers a great dining experience with large portion sizes. I repeat, large portion sizes. The menu makes it hard to choose something to order because there is so much good food to choose from. It was kind of daunting to look across the entire newspaper menu and arrive at one menu item (that’s why I ended up choosing the pancakes and the tri-tip dip), but you should be fine with just one menu item even if you are very hungry. If you want good American food, head to Black Bear Diner.

HL Hot Pot

6930 65th St
Ste 117
Sacramento, CA 95823

Rating: ★★★☆☆

This was my first experience at a hot pot restaurant. However, I have had quite a few hot pot meals at home with various types of food. As we walked into the restaurant at around 8:45, there were NO OTHER CUSTOMERS THERE. After being seated, one group of people did come in as well though. Upon seating, the waiter questioned whether we wanted the hot pot menu or the kitchen menu. Of course, we chose the hot pot menu. We received a paper check-off sheet filled with various uncooked options to be delivered to us. Each item whether it be meat, vegetable, or noodle came on its own container/plate. Prices and descriptions were listed on the sheet as well.

Today we ordered the sliced NY beef, sliced pork shoulder, chicken breast, beef balls, fish filet, Napa cabbage, tiny corn, pork and shrimp wontons, and ramen noodles. For the hot pot soup choices, we chose the house special spicy and the miso. The house spicy soup is very spicy. The miso soup was very flavorful. While waiting for all the items to arrive, you can see that all the items were basically inside a large refrigerator lined with a bunch of glass doors that the employees access.

Overall, HL hot pot succeeded, but they really need more customers. Upon receiving the items, we realized that ordered way too much food for two people. The cooking/eating experience was quite enjoyable, albeit the food was extremely hot so you couldn’t really eat too fast. If you have never tried hot pot before, then you should definitely give it a shot.

India Oven

3511 Truxel Rd
Ste 1
Sacramento, CA 95834

Rating: ★★★½☆

This was my first attempt at eating Indian food, so my tastes were not really accustomed to the flavors. With that being said, I thoroughly enjoyed their curry chicken and curry lamb! India Oven provided a lunch buffet or order from menu option. Today, the buffet seemed to be the right choice. With many dishes that continue to baffle me, certain tastes like their white rice, fried rice, and meat dishes really stood out. The tandori chicken reminded me of Chinese BBQ pork, but of course this tasted completely different. The chicken was really good, and had a nice red color to the outside of the meat. The naan was delicious. It went really well with the curries or alone. At the end, I also enjoyed the mango ice cream.

Overall, I found India Oven to live up to its praises. After this experience, I am ready to try some other Indian restaurants as well.

88 Tofu – Part 2

6914 65th St 301
Sacramento, CA 95823

Rating: ★★★★☆

In contrast to my previous visit to 88 Tofu, I wanted to try their Beef Bulgogi. The side dishes presented this time differed from the previous offerings by one dish, spicy seaweed instead of kimchi squash. I did not order the tofu soup today, but it did look nice and tasted nice. 88 Tofu’s beef bulgogi tasted different from other Korean restaurants. The taste of the sauce was more sweet and less soy-saucey. The meat was tender and was a bit more fatty, but it was not over fatty and kept the tenderness. I found that the beef bulgogi today had more onions than in the previous review’s pork bulgogi, but I still ended up eating the entire dish with the entirety of the rice provided.

Overall, 88 Tofu succeeds again with their dishes. The beef bulgogi is definitely something you want to order.
